42% of women in manufacturing sector across India are from TN – PTR

Finance minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan on Tuesday said that 42 percent of the entire women workforce in the manufacturing sector in India is present in Tamil Nadu.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, PT presented FICCI FLO women achievers award in a function organised in a private hotel in Chennai. Before giving the awards, PTR said that Tamil Nad has the largest number of women employed in the manufacturing sector in the country.

“In a recent survey somewhere around 42 percent of women manufacturing employees all over India are in Tamil Nadu alone. That is the extent of engagement of women in the formal economy in Tamil Nadu,” said PTR

He also said that Tamil Nadu is by far the number one state when it comes to inclusion of women in the workspace. “If I take a broad basket of measures (for women) from per capita GDP to social capital to human development to access to health services, access to higher education Tamil Nad is by far the number one state in the country. And this is a hundred years of effort when Justice Party which legislated in 1921 to give voting potver to women and compulsory elementary education to boys and girls, said PTR.

Following his special address, PT presented awards for eight winners under various categories. Swetha Kochar, partner at PKC management consulting, received the award under the entrepreneur category, Rajashri Sai, promoter director, Impactree data technologies, received the award for upcoming entrepreneur, Kavitha Selvaraj, founder/principal architect, city works design consultants/Trilogue studio LLP, received the award under professional category, Girija Ramanathan, founder and MD, Sampradaya, received the award under social entrepreneur (individual), Lalitha Kumaraswamy, managing trustee,

TANKER (Tamil Nadu Kidney Research) foundation, received the award under social entrepreneur (NGO), Vaishnavi Vigneshraja, director, EQuad engineering services pt It, received the award under special recognition (upcoming entrepreneur), Usha Abhay Jain, principal, Shri Shankarlal Sundarbai Shaun Jain college for women, received the award under special recognition (institution) and Preethi Srinivasan, founder, Soulfree, received the award under special recognition (NGO).
